“Know Thy Self” is the inscription over the Oracle at Delphi. What tools or methods
can we use in order to know ourselves better? We can use meditation, tarot,
visualization and the rune stones. My choice, to help me identify what things work
for me and what things set up obstacles for me in my path are the runes. I use the
runes personally and with my clients during their intuitive counseling sessions.
So what is their origin and how were they used? Let’s explore.
The runes are ancient Norse alphabetic inscriptions carved on stone, wood or bone, each
letter or character has a meaningful name or sound. Runes were used in poetry,
legal papers and on marking stones designating special locations or spiritual
significance. Used in divination the runes never evolved into a spoken language.
During battle rune symbols were painted on warrior shields and on their bodies for
protection. In contemporary times runes serve as a means for the spiritual warrior
to shield themselves from obstacles or barriers impending their growth. Most
importantly saving us from ourselves as we can be our own worst enemy.
